For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his company had reached their objective and were digging in he saw a small party of the enemy getting a machine-gun into position. Without waiting for orders he at once rushed out at them, calling on them to surrender. They did so and were captured together with their gun. He showed great courage and initiative.
Entitled to wear a wound stripe Wounded with gunshot wounds to the back in 1917
